Speaker Pleased with Health Care Task Force Plan

IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 5, 2007

Topeka – Kansas House Speaker Melvin Neufeld (R-Ingalls) said today he supports the four-part health care plan announced today by the House Republican Task Force on Health Care.

“Kansas has a number of health care issues, as do other states, like un-reimbursed care and uninsured populations,” explained Speaker Neufeld.  “The important issue is we develop ways that make health care and insurance coverage affordable, available, and portable for Kansans.  We need to pass legislation this session that affects items needed immediately and then develop long-term plans with the Kansas Health Policy Authority.”

Task Force Members developed KanCare, a four-part health care plan that uses market forces to expand coverage, limit costs, improve quality, and guarantee long-term stability for all Kansans.

·        Make Commercial Insurance more affordable

·        KanInsure:  Transitions Medicaid and uninsured patients into the private market using targeted approaches.

·        Medicaid Reform – New MediKan

·        Strengthen Charity Care

Task Force Members include: Rep. Jeff Colyer, M.D. Chairman; Rep. Peggy Mast, Vice-Chair; Rep. Bob Bethell, Rep. Terrie Huntington, Rep. Mike Kiegerl, Rep. Jeff King, Rep. Brenda Landwehr,  Rep. Ray Merrick, Rep. Melvin Neufeld, Rep. Mike O’Neal, Rep. Clark Shultz, Rep. Kenny Wilk, and Rep. Kevin Yoder.
