House Media Rules
On the first day of the 2007 Legislative Session, Speaker Melvin Neufeld pledged to his fellow Representatives he would make sure the body conducted itself with respect and decorum so they may craft good public policy. It is in that spirit, the Speaker’s Office has updated the House Chamber’s Media Rules issued by previous Speakers.
As members of the media, reporters and photographers perform an important service for Kansans when they report on the discussions and decisions made by state lawmakers. This is why they are granted much greater access to the House of Representatives when it is in session than the general public. It also is why certain rules are crucial in conducting legislative business.
The rules members of the media are asked to follow when on the House floor when the Kansas House of Representatives is in session are in no way meant to interfere with their ability to report on what happens under the Statehouse dome. They are to ensure that Kansas receives the public policy it deserves.
