House Approves English Language Bill

For Immediate Release:
February 21, 2007

Topeka - The Kansas House of Representatives today voted 114-7 to approve House Bill 2140 establishing English as the official language of Kansas.

"I was pleased to see strong bi-partisan support acknowledging English as the official language of Kansas," House Speaker Melvin Neufeld said. "The overwhelming bi-partisan support for this bill in the Committee on Military, Veterans, and Homeland Security and today on the House floor shows the House Republican Agenda truly represents the values of all Kansans."

Speaker Neufeld went on to say, "Making English our state’s official language will help immigrants who come to Kansas to live and work understand Kansas is serious about them becoming a part of our culture and economy."

Majority Leader Ray Merrick echoed the Speaker’s satisfaction with the bill’s passage.

"I'm glad to see the House embrace this opportunity to improve government efficiency and promote English proficiency. The bill utilizes our common language to streamline government while extending opportunities for immersion to those who don't speak English natively," said Majority Leader Merrick. "Once again, the House Republican caucus has demonstrated its awareness of the issues most important to all Kansans".

House members amended the bill by adding $500,000 in funding for adult education programs for citizenship and English language classes. The funding will support local programs offered by community colleges and faith-based organizations that already have excellent track records in serving those who don’t fit into the traditional educational system. The Kansas Board of Regents will oversee the grant money.

HB 2140 now moves to the Senate for its members’ consideration.
