Family and Representative Call on Senate to Let Bill Move Forward
Topeka – The family of murder victims Chelsea Brooks and her unborn child, Alexa Lynn and Kansas State Representative Steve Brunk (R-Wichita) announced today they will hold a news conference in Overland Park this Friday, March 9, 2007 in support of House Bill 2006, Alexa’s Law.
“The Kansas House of Representatives passed Alexa’s Law last month and the Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled a hearing on it,” explained Rep. Brunk. “We hope to bring attention to this hearing and increase support for this important piece of legislation to move forward.”
Right now under Kansas law, prosecutors can only file charges against the murderer for the death of the mother. Alexa’s law changes the Kansas Criminal Code to allow the accused to face two murder charges.
Alexa’s Law is named in memory of Alexa Lynn Brooks, the unborn child of Chelsea Brooks who were murder last summer in Wichita. Their family is working with Rep. Brunk to get the bill passed.
Rep. Brunk, sponsor of the bill, has introduced the bill in previous sessions. House members approved it in 2005 but it saw no action in the Kansas Senate. The Senate Judiciary Committee will hear testimony on HB 2006 on March 15th at 9:30 am in Room 123-S at the Statehouse.
The federal government and 34 other states have similar laws already in place.
