WICHITA CALLS ON LEGISLATURE TO APPROVE ALEXA’S LAW
Topeka - House Representative Steve Brunk (R-Wichita) today thanked the Wichita City Council for approving this morning Resolution No. 07-168, calling on the Kansas Legislature to enact Alexa’s Law as approved by the Kansas House of Representatives 94-28.
“I am pleased the largest city in the State of Kansas recognized the importance of passing this significant legislation and encouraging other cities to follow Wichita’s lead in asking the legislature and the governor to pass Alexa’s Law as approved by House Members,” said Rep. Brunk. “Despite what some may say, this bill is not about abortion. Alexa’s Law is about justice, justice for the taking of a life by violence. Alexa’s Law amends the criminal code to recognize the life of an unborn child who is murdered.”
Right now under Kansas law, prosecutors can only file charges against the murderer for the death of the pregnant mother. Alexa’s law changes the Kansas Criminal Code to allow the accused to face two murder charges.
Alexa’s Law is named in memory of Alexa Lynn Brooks, the unborn child of Chelsea Brooks who were murder last summer in Wichita. Their family is working with Rep. Brunk to get the bill passed.
Rep. Brunk, sponsor of the bill, has introduced the bill in previous sessions. House members approved it in 2005 but it saw no action in the Kansas Senate. The Senate Judiciary Committee will hear testimony on HB 2006 on March 15th at 9:30 am in Room 123-S at the Statehouse.
The federal government and 34 other states have similar laws already in place.
