REP. COLLOTON SELECTED TO EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
Representative to address Board of Directors about Federal and State Legislation

Leawood – The Council of State Government’s Justice Center Board of Directors recently selected Kansas House of Representatives Rep. Pat Colloton (R-Leawood) as one of four members of its Executive Committee.

“I am honored to be part of the national Justice Center that focuses on important state issues such as criminal justice and immigration,” Rep. Colloton said.  “All states benefit from the Justice Center work that provides comprehensive analysis of state policy options and successful state programs.”

The Leawood Representative will address the 25-member Board of Directors at its Western Regional Meeting of the Council of State Governments in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, September 15th & 16th.  She will report on the status of federal legislation that provides state funding for prison and probation reentry programs and the lobbying efforts in Washington, D.C. that she and other Executive Committee members recently undertook.  They will lead the discussion on future issues to be taken up by the staff at the Justice Center.

She also will serve on a panel to discuss the topic of “Justice Reinvestment” which includes consolidating the use of state funds that are distributed piecemeal through family support programs into targeted state expenditures in high crime areas.

“With growing prison populations, our states face difficult decisions whether to expand their prison systems,” explained Rep. Colloton.  “I believe we must change how we prepare offenders for a life outside prison.  We must break the cycle of repeat offenders.”

Rep. Colloton authored and sponsored community corrections and prison reentry legislation that became part of Senate Bill 14 this past legislative session in Kansas.  The new law allows the Department of Corrections to implement a new grant program to assist community corrections programs focused on reducing the number of repeat offenders.
