TOPEKA –The Committee on Military, Veterans, and Homeland Security today approved House Bill 2140 that would establish English as the official language of Kansas.
Chairman Don Myers (R-Derby) said he was pleased with the overwhelming and bi-partisan support the bill received from the committee.
"This measure is a perfect example of legislators acting as public servants for the best interests of all Kansans, not as Republicans or Democrats trying to push their own agendas," explained Chairman Myer. "English is the common language of Kansas and this bill affirms that by not unnecessarily interfering with state agencies or localities’ essential communications in other languages."
Rep. Candy Ruff (D-Leavenworth), the Ranking Minority on the committee, expressed her satisfaction with today’s action.
"This is good public policy by not establishing a language mandate. House Bill 2140 recognizes the importance of English as the most powerful tool for a person to become successful in Kansas," said Rep. Ruff.
Rep. Ruff also said the bill does not affect the Native American or current immigrant populations in Kansas.
"In no way does this bill limit or denigrate the use of any other language by a tribal government or any immigrant who chooses to live and work in Kansas," explained Ruff.
Rep. Mario Goico (R-Wichita), Vice-Chair of the committee, said today that this legislation is important to him.
"As a person who can say that English is my second language, this legislation encourages those who are not proficient in the language to become fluent," stated Rep.Goico.
Representative Goico continued to explain how important English has been in his life, "For me, English unlocked doors and provided me the opportunity to thrive. Now, while serving in the legislature, I am pleased to be supporting a measure that encourages other non-native speakers to experience the positive effects that knowing English can have on a person’s life."
House Bill 2140 passed as amended by the Committee on Veterans, Military, and Homeland Security and is expected to come before the House of Representatives before the end of session.
