REP. HOLMES APPOINTED CHAIR OF INTERIM COMMITTEE
Topeka – Kansas Speaker of the House of Representatives Melvin Neufeld (R-Ingalls) announced today he has appointed Rep. Carl Holmes (R-Liberal) to chair the 2007 Energy, Natural Resources and Environment Interim Committee.
“Rep. Holmes’ vast knowledge of energy and utility issues and his service as Chairman of the House Energy and Utilities Committee made his appointment as the interim committee’s chairman an easy decision,” Speaker Neufeld said. “His leadership will provide important guidance as committee members review and make recommendations to the 2008 Legislative Session.”
The 11-member committee will meet six times between now and the next session to study:
- Energy Efficiency of State and Local Government Buildings
- Intensive Groundwater Use Control Areas
- Distribution and Transportation of Gasoline, Biofuels, and Diesel
Rep. Holmes said he appreciated the opportunity to Chair the Interim committee with issues concerning energy and water which are so important to all Kansans.
“Government needs to set an example with energy efficiency and conservation. We will develop proposals for all Kansas Governmental energy usage and practices,” Rep. Holmes said. “After the disasters this year in Kansas destroyed energy infrastructure, we need to examine what can be done to improve and restore our vehicle fuel distribution system. And as groundwater continues to decline, we will study the regulatory system that governs groundwater withdrawal and may suggest changes to the current system.”
Rep. Holmes represents the 114th District which includes most of Seward County and the cities of Kismet and Liberal. He is the chairman of the House Energy and Utilities Committee and the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules and Regulations. He also serves on the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee and the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Budget Committee.
