Rep. Lance Kinzer Announces Two Bills
What: Kansas Representative Lance Kinzer will discuss two bills (20+ co-sponsors)
he has filed that would change the manner in which judges are selected for
the Court of Appeals and the state Supreme Court. Currently, the Kansas
Bar Association holds a majority sway over the selection process. Kinzer’s
bills would place the power of selection back in Kansans’ hands.
Who: Rep. Lance Kinzer, state representative from District 14
When: Wednesday, February 13 immediate upon the adjournment of the House
Where: Room 136 North in the Kansas State Capitol
Key polling results reveal …
• The plurality (37%) of Kansas voters thought Kansas already followed the Federal
Model by which “justices are appointed by the governor of Kansas and confirmed by
the legislature.”
• 55% of Kansas voters elected themselves the best deciders of who should rule their
highest Court.
• By a margin of 58% to 35%, voters rejected the current lawyer-heavy make-up of the
Supreme Court nominating commission and instead agreed that “it is best that the
deciding majority…of the nominating commission be appointed by elected political
officials because we want the judicial selection process to be accountable to the
people of Kansas.”
