Legislation Aimed at Helping Grieving Families

Topeka -- Kansas House of Representative member Joe Patton (R-Topeka) announced today he will introduce legislation this session that will give recourse to families impacted by picketers at their loved ones’ funerals.

“I want to empower Kansans with the ability to fight back against those who would cause them emotional stress while they grieve for their lost love one,” explained Rep. Patton.

Patton’s legislation will establish a civil procedure that will give families recourse through the court-recognized Tort of Outrage by defining funeral picketing as so outrageous in character and so extreme as to go beyond all bounds of decency.

“This simple legislation will give Kansans a remedy in court when they have been subjected to such outrageous behavior, and that is how Kansans view picketing funerals,” said Patton.

Rep. Patton serves the 54th District.
