Legislation Would Help Small Companies Expand

Topeka -- Kansas House of Representative member Joe Patton (R-Topeka) introduced a bill that will empower Kansas tradesmen and small businesses like plumbers, electricians and air conditioning mechanics.

“Many Kansas counties and cities require those who work certain trades to be licensed.  The problem is that because the education requirements vary from city to city, a tradesman licensed in Topeka may not be able to work in Manhattan,” explained Rep. Patton.  “This bill will require cities and counties to recognize licenses and certificates issued by one another – reducing government regulations.”

Rep. Patton said he realized the need for House Bill 2251 after talking with one of his constituents who is a plumber.

“He can work in Topeka – respond to emergency calls day or night.  But his opportunity to grow his business into Lawrence or Manhattan ends unless he studies for and passes two additional tests.  That just doesn’t make sense to me,” Patton said.

Ron Stryker of Latta-Whitlow, a local heating, air conditioning and plumbing firm, explains that “recent continuing education requirements have confused the process.  This bill will maintain continuing education requirements with the needed reciprocity.”

Rep. Patton serves the 54th District.  HB 2251 was referred to House Commerce and Labor Committee.
