Topeka – Kansas Representative Joe Patton (R-Topeka) announced he will host a series of meetings to discuss reforming the state’s sentencing guidelines. The first meeting will be on Tuesday, June 26th in Room 423-South in the Capitol. Invitations have been sent to a variety of persons who might be interested in reform.
“The current guidelines have allowed criminals to walk the street, and to prey on the poor, the weak, the innocent and the elderly, and it’s time we did something about it,” Rep. Patton said. “This meeting will bring together experts and stakeholders to talk about possible reform of sentencing guidelines."
Safe Streets of Topeka/Shawnee County has adopted a project to make Topeka the “Safest Capital City” of more than 100,000 population. Those on the coalition have been divided into committees to study a variety of issues, mostly focusing on prevention. Rep. Patton serves on the coalition’s Government Committee and these meetings concerning the sentencing guidelines will be his contribution to the “Safest Capital City” effort.
Shawnee County District Attorney Robert Hecht also will attend the meeting.
