Topeka – Kansas Speaker of the House of Representatives Melvin Neufeld (R-Ingalls) announced today he has named Reps. Virgil Peck, Jr. (R-Tyro) and Jeff King (R-Independence) to serve on the 2007 Assessment and Taxation Committee Interim Committee.

“Reps. Peck and King have been essential members of the House Taxation Committee.  Their expertise and knowledge of the many important tax issues facing our state will be valuable as the interim committee reviews and makes legislative recommendations for the 2008 legislative session,” Speaker Neufeld said.

The 13-member committee (eight House members and five Senate members) will meet six days between now and the next session to study:

  • Corporate Income Tax Shelters
  • Sales Tax Exemptions
  • Property Tax payment Date

  • Income Tax Withholding
  • Local Sales Tax Authority
  • Tax Relief for Storm-Damaged Property
  • Corporation Income Tax Credits
  • Property Taxes on Newly Constructed Residential Property

Both Peck and King said they look forward to the work ahead of them.

"I am honored to be one of the eight House members appointed to the Interim Assessment and Taxation Committee,” Rep. Peck said.  “The topics we will be working on are very important to Montgomery County taxpayers; especially those dealing with property tax relief."

"I am excited to continue the work of providing much needed property tax relief to Kansans, especially those affected by the recent flooding in southeast Kansas," Rep. King said.

Rep. Peck represents the 11th District which includes part of Montgomery County and the cities of Caney, Cherryvale, Coffeyville, Dearing, Havana, Liberty and Tyro.  During the regular session, he serves on the House Taxation and Insurance and Financial Institutions Committees as well as Vice-Chairman of the House Transportation Committee.
