REP. PECK SPONSORS VETERANS TAX EXEMPTION BILL
Tyro - State Representative Virgil Peck, Jr. (R-Tyro) announced to a group of veterans gathered for a Veterans Appreciation Breakfast on Saturday in Tyro that he has authored legislation to provide tax relief for disabled military veterans.
Because of his attendance at the Kansas Legislative Education and Research retreat in Wichita on the same day Peck was unable to attend the breakfast in person, so he made the announcement via video.
Peck told the veterans that he understood and appreciated their service to America and that this legislation was, “a small way of saying thank you”.
“We have many American veterans who gave of themselves to serve our country and protect our freedoms who, because of their military service, are struggling to make ends meet. My bill will assist them in paying some of the cost for items they use everyday,” Rep. Peck said.
The bill, which will be presented before the Kansas Legislature when it convenes in January, exempts disabled military veterans living in Kansas from paying sales tax on food and other personal items such as: toiletries, cleaning supplies and over the counter medications. As written, the bill provides a disabled veteran, their spouse or other family member residing with them a tax exempt card which will be presented to a merchant when a purchase of the afore mentioned items is made.
Peck said he will be visiting with other legislators to secure additional co-sponsors on the Veteran’s Tax Relief Bill. He added, “We have many good legislators whom I feel certain will wish to add their name and support to this important piece of legislation. It’s the right thing to do.”
Peck represents southern and eastern Montgomery County which includes the towns of Cherryvale, Coffeyville and Caney.
